New Forest English
A singular variety of West Country English
An illustrated talk by Professor Christopher Mulvey
New Forest English differs from Hampshire English because of words of Norman French, Angevin French, and Romani origin. There is reason to think that New Forest English preserves an older form of West Country English because the whole great area
was agriculturally and economically isolated from 1079 onwards after William the Conqueror had seized land from Southampton to Bournemouth and made it his Royal Forest.
