Lymington and District Historical Society
About the Lymington and District Historical Society

Aims
The Lymington and District Historical Society is your connection between the town today and twenty, two hundred or two thousand years ago.
We have enjoyed talks about or excursions to buildings including fine houses, roman villas, forest courts, farms, gardens, churches, monasteries, the shops in the high street, roads, railways and ferries.
How our predecessors behaved: work and religion, medicine and charity, crime and war, law and the poor and all over the past thousand years and sometimes more.
Share our interest in your past by joining us for our talks, excursions and research where you learn from local and national historians and they will learn from you.
We are volunteer-run, a not for profit organisation sustained solely by the enthusiasm and subscriptions of its members.
We have a series of winter lectures and summer excursions to places of historical interest.
History of the Society
Our Society was founded in 1951 when it was called the Lymington Historical Record Society, publishing papers and providing lectures for the general public.
In 1983 it was renamed and now is the Lymington and District Historical Society which reflected the greater emphasis on a variety of lectures covering not only Lymington but much of the surrounding area.
The publishing side of the Society gradually declined although Bob Coles (1939-2000), the noted historian of Lymington, still published under the imprint of the society.
In 2022 we produced a booklet called Recollections of World War 2.
Which was based on a very successful evening of short talks given by our members in the same year, there was a similar book produced about the Great War in 2014.
Leading members have been published more generally in particular our late Life Presidents Jude James and Arthur Lloyd.
Current committee member Nick Saunders contributes regular excellent articles under the Reflections byline to the Lymington Times / New Milton Advertiser as did Jude James in the past, Nick is also Chair of the Milton Heritage Society.
